The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan Session 3

Session 3 began with the party entering a grand chamber filled with life-sized clay statues resembling an ancient army. Algos used Detect Magic and initially found nothing unusual, but later sensed magic emanating from under a weak-looking cairn or dome. Yor Eye hacked at the dome with a hand axe, and Algos detected two magical effects, one inside and one underneath.

Inside the dome, they discovered six sets of worthless bones, six jade bead pictorials worth 50 gold pieces each, a magical silver and turquoise pendant, and a bronze lamp. As Yor Eye picked up the lamp, a hidden trapdoor was revealed. Upon opening the trapdoor, a fearsome allip climbed out of the secret compartment below. After a chaotic combat, the allip was defeated. The party found that the allip was wearing a bracelet similar to one Yari had previously acquired, which they determined were amulets of protection from turning. Despite their protective properties against undead, the party considered their high value of 650 gold pieces each more appealing.

Continuing to explore the grand chamber, they found a bronze door barred with a pitted copper bar, which they easily removed. Beyond the door was a long corridor ending in a large, sandy stone block that seemed out of place. After some initial caution, Vila and Yor Eye pushed the heavy block up a northern hallway, revealing a set of stairs leading west.

Good Morning, while the others were dealing with the block, found three arrowheads and thousands of small coral and shell beads among the bones of the allip.

The party ascended the stairs, finding themselves in a long corridor with smooth stone cylinders set in the floor as rollers. After experimenting with them, they reached the top of the corridor, which branched east and west, with a room to the north.

They chose the northern path, entering a spacious vaulted hall, weathered and charred, with toppled stone statues of baboon-like creatures and the partially eaten remains of actual baboons covered in fungus. Ferrigan, scouting ahead, noticed a spherical object floating in the air at chest height with a central eye and a dozen tentacled eyes. Identified as a fungus creature, it was hostile and quickly dispatched by Vila. A search revealed a sack made of fish skin containing seven silver pellets.

Returning to the main corridor, they found another staircase leading down and a door. Opening the door released a bitter stench, revealing a room filled with pungent rubbish and a dozen or more large, glowing fire beetles. Vila, investigating a glint of shiny objects in the trash, inadvertently disturbed the beetles' nest, leading to combat. During the fight, Yor Eye briefly went berserk. The party retreated into an extra-dimensional space created by Good Morning's Rope Trick to take a long rest.

While resting, Vila examined the loot from the beetle nest, finding odd pieces of metal, polished rocks, broken crystal, three turquoise gems, and a battered, rusty +1 dagger. Good Morning used Remove Curse on Yari's cursed weapon, which broke his attunement but did not remove the curse from the weapon itself.

Exiting their refuge, they entered a room with two stone slabs bearing perfectly preserved, dust-covered human figures covered in snake skin, with a low table between them holding a crystal flask of silvery dust and two goblets. Glyphs on the wall warned of a “many eyed god” and fiery death. Yor Eye's poking of one of the figures caused their eyes to snap open, and the figures, a male and female, demanded atonement for disturbing their “glorious sleep”. A negotiation for a bribe turned hostile, and combat ensued. The party managed to knock both figures unconscious, looted them, and then bound and gagged them.

The session concluded with the party facing two unexplored doors in the room. They chose one and found themselves in another long hallway ending at the other side of the large stone block they had moved earlier. They decided to take a short rest before continuing their exploration.
